DO NOT have a yard sale on Tuesday

A brief update from Operation "Moving Madness":

7:30am
I've finished my last days in the ER and tonight is the big send-off extravaganza. Some of my friends and co-workers have graciously planned a BBQ/party to celebrate my upcoming adventure (or the fact they won't have to see my face for 4 months). But really I think it's just an excuse to have a party...which is fine by me!
I am looking forward to seeing everyone outside the confines of the chaotic, smelly, lovable, amazing Mercy. I just hope someone brings turkey sandwiches for late night snacks, and bus tokens for a ride home :)

The activities here on Bayard street have otherwise included packing, packing, and more packing. I'm pretty sure my boxes, kind of like Gremlins, are multiplying after midnight. And you would have thought that after going through this process every few years I'd have it down to a science, right? Wrong.

I HAVE become familiar with all the storage facilities and rental truck companies in a 10 mile radius of my apartment. And I have learned that when you hire movers they prefer cash, charge a three hour minimum, and always try to scam you with surprises like double mileage charges, government mandated snack breaks, and the guy who's first day on the job is always the day of your move... Which makes living out of a car/boat/RV, or old school bus more and more appealing each time I do this. No packing or storing required. All you have to do is park that baby and walk away.

Of course the best way to make sure you never accumulate too much "stuff" is to plan a mid-life crisis once every 3-4 years. It ensures that as you become too cheap to spring for even the smallest of storage spaces, you are forced to sell off your items, one-by-one.
So now on this lovely Tuesday morning in the midst of my third "mid-life crisis", I find myself perched on my doorstep attempting to host a yard sale...and waiting for the crowds to arrive.

8:30am
I honestly thought that in a city of over 1.3 million people, there would always be someone, somewhere looking to buy something at a deal. Apparently not in North PB. And obviously NOT on a Tuesday. I've been told that Tuesdays are the best days to buy airline tickets because that's the day they are the cheapest. Well today is the day to buy a grill, desk, luggage, old shoes, and a hammock chair...Because today in San Diego it's cheapest on Bayard street. Tuesday is deal day!

Sooo, anyone in the market for some water-skis?

July 19, 2014

I'm Baaaack!

Well, I'm back at it again. Each time I say it's going to be my last time. But just like carb addict trapped in the mac 'n cheese aisle of the grocery store...I just can't say "no"!

As most of you know, I will soon be departing for another voyage working aboard the MV Explorer during the semester-long study abroad program known as Semester at Sea (SAS). On August 19th, I will head to London to board my floating home and begin an adventure around the Atlantic! And this time I am going to try much harder to keep you all updated on the goings-on at sea.

Each time I travel I have the best of intentions of regularly posting, but then I climb aboard the ship, which has this nasty habit of rocking in a nice gentle way, and I find myself transformed into this amazingly lazy, sleepy individual who often wonders how the days slip by so quickly. Alas, I am developing a more rigorous daily routine in an attempt to maximize my experiences and devote quality time to the blog.
But consider yourselves warned...

The plan right now is to head East on August 8th. I will be driving Sylvester (my car) and Bella (my cat) to Indiana where they will bask in some Midwestern love for the next few months. Then it's onward to NYC for "Baby-Watch 2014".  If I'm lucky, I just might become "Auntie Em" before I set sail. Either way, I'm getting in some awesome family time before I leave!

So here I am, sitting in my apartment, looking at all of the empty cardboard boxes that should be full, and finding yet another way to procrastinate. I am planning on placing all of my earthly possessions in storage for the next 4-5 months. It's taking a lot of discipline to pack 4 months worth of "stuff" into two giant (but not to exceed 50 lbs) duffel bags. Packing (for anything) is not one of my strengths. Too many contingency plans and "what ifs" to consider. I usually WAY over-think things. Shocking, I know.

In the meantime, I make lists, more lists, lists of lists, and mostly just stare at my empty boxes. This is the part I hate. Invariably I will forget something important, like deodorant. Contemplating scenarios like this may or may not result in a full scale melt-down (because of course no one sells deodorant East of the Prime Meridian).

Anyway, I suppose I've done enough procrastinating for one day. I will do my best to keep you all updated on the adventures leading up to THE adventure. In the meantime, please browse the links on the site and feel free to pass along this blog link to anyone you feel might enjoy "sailing" along with me this fall!

Until next time...
